Hell's Gate weather by season

Hell's Gate National Park lies in the Rift Valley in Nakuru County, south of Lake Naivasha. The weather there follows the Kenyan rain pattern. March to May are the Long Rains, and October to December bring a second rainy season. The drier stretches fall between them.

A season is not a forecast. Rain in the Long Rains does not fall every day, and a dry month can still bring a heavy shower. Check the forecast a few days before you go, and keep a spare day in your plan. If your dates are fixed, compare Hell's Gate day tours from Nairobi and read the cancellation terms for bad weather.

When to visit Hell's Gate

The seasons compared, with what they mean for a visit.

PeriodWhat to expectHow to plan
January to FebruaryDrier stretchGood for cycling and walks, still carry a rain layer
March to MayLong RainsWetter tracks, a higher flash flood risk, flexible dates
June to SeptemberDrier stretchA good window for bike rides and walks
October to DecemberSecond rainy seasonSudden floods are possible, plan a buffer day

October sits between the drier stretch and the second rainy season, so treat it as showery. For most visitors, January and February or June to September are the safer choices for a bike ride. No season is free of rain, so pack a rain layer and keep a buffer day.

Flash floods in the gorge

Why the rain matters more than the sky above you.

Rain far away reaches the gorge

Heavy rain outside the park can send dangerous amounts of water through the gorge. A dry sky at the entrance does not mean the gorge is safe.

Follow closures

Do not enter the narrow lower gorge unless KWS has confirmed that it is open, and follow every closure and local instruction. The Ol Njorowa Gorge guide explains access and safety.

Roads and tracks

Park tracks are dirt roads. Ask at the gate which ones are passable after rain. Avoid flooded roads on the way.

Heavier rain late in the year

From October to December, heavier rain and sudden floods are possible. Avoid flooded roads and follow the instructions of the authorities. This is general advice for the region and not a closure of Hell's Gate.

Past floods

Flash floods in the gorge have happened in April 2012 and September 2019. The history of Hell's Gate sets out the facts calmly.

Plan your day around the weather

Simple habits that work in every season.

Start early

The gates open at 06:00 and close at 18:00. An early start gives you room if rain moves in and you need to turn back.

Pack for sun and rain

Bring a rain layer, sun protection and drinking water. KWS advises campers to carry their own water and food, and the same sense applies to a day ride.

Combined day trips

Many day trips combine the park with a boat ride on Lake Naivasha. If rain changes your plan, ask the operator what happens to the lake part before you book.

Leave in good time

The gates close at 18:00. Rain can slow you down on the tracks, so keep a margin for the way out.

Camping in the rain

Heavy rain changes campsite plans. The camping guide lists the campsites, the rates and the park rules.

How long to stay

A half day is enough for a bike ride or a walk. A full day lets you add other activities, such as the Olkaria Geothermal Spa, whose main lagoon is kept at 36 to 40 ยฐC.

Cycling

Wet tracks slow a bike ride and can change which routes you choose. See the cycling guide before you choose a day.

For the weather on the lake side, see Lake Naivasha weather. If your trip starts in the capital, Nairobi weather covers the first days.

Hell's Gate weather: frequently asked questions

When is the rainy season in Hell's Gate?

March to May are the Long Rains, and October to December bring a second rainy season. Rain can fall in other months as well, so keep a spare day.

What is the best time to visit Hell's Gate?

January and February and June to September are the drier stretches and suit a bike ride best. No month guarantees dry weather, so check the forecast shortly before you go.

Does it rain every day in the rainy season?

No. A rainy season is a period with more rain, not constant rain. Plan for showers and for wet tracks.

Why can rain far away be dangerous in the gorge?

Water from rain outside the park can run through the gorge in large amounts. A dry sky at the entrance is no proof of safety, so follow closures and local instructions.

What should I pack for the weather?

Bring a rain layer, sun protection and drinking water. Gates are open from 06:00 to 18:00, so an early start helps.

Is this website run by KWS?

No. This is an independent travel guide and is not run by or connected to the Kenya Wildlife Service or any operator. Confirm closures with KWS before you travel.
