Hell's Gate cycling in brief
Hell's Gate cycling is the main reason many visitors come. Cycling is a standard activity in the park, which is run by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), and the roads across the grass plains are dirt roads. Most people ride for a half day. The riding is easy to start, because hire bikes are on offer about 1 km before Elsa Gate.
Three costs add up: park entry, the KWS bicycle fee and the bike hire itself. They go to different places, so keep them apart when you budget. Prices are for 2026 and the hire price varies by shop.

Our picks: Hell's Gate cycling tours
The private-guide day with bike hire in the price is the straightforward choice for a first ride. The cycling day with a bike guide suits you if you want the gorge on the same trip, and the Crescent Island combination adds a walk by the lake.

Routes and distances
Treat the distances as a guide.
Elsa Gate to the gorge
Allow about 7 to 8 km one way on a dirt road across the plain. The gorge area is where most day riders turn around. Whether you can enter the narrow gorge is a separate question.
Gorge access โThe Buffalo Circuit
This loop is about 14 km. It suits riders who want more time among the grassland and cliffs without leaving the main roads.
Surface and pace
The roads are dirt and the grass plains can be dusty or soft after rain. Start early, bring water, and leave time for stops. The park closes its gates at 6 p.m.
What cycling costs in 2026
Per adult non-resident unless stated.
| Item | Who charges | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Park entry | KWS | $50 (adult, non-resident) |
| Bicycle activity fee | KWS | $10 (non-resident), KES 300 (East African citizen or resident) |
| Bike hire for one day | Hire shop near Elsa Gate | KES 800 to 1,200 |
| Ranger escort | KWS | KES 2,000 up to 4 hours, KES 4,000 for longer |
| Own bike | KWS | Bicycle fee still applies |
Bike hire is not a payment to KWS, and the KWS bicycle fee is not a hire price. For most visitors, the simplest plan is to hire near the gate, pay the park fees online in advance, and ride the main road to the gorge and back. See entry fee for the full rates.
Safety and park rules on a bike
The rules for visitors apply to riders as well.
Keep 20 m from animals
Stay at least 20 m away, and never feed, chase or startle wildlife. Zebras, giraffes and buffalo can be close to the road. Stop and let animals pass.
Wildlife โStay on the roads
Riding off the existing roads and tracks is not allowed. Vehicles keep to 40 km/h, which also helps when you share the road.
Check your bike
Look at brakes and tyres before you leave the shop, and ask for a helmet if you want one. The condition of hire bikes differs.
No plastic, no litter
Single-use plastic is banned in the park. Take your rubbish out with you.
Watch the sky
Rain outside the park can send water into the gorge. Do not enter the gorge on a bike or on foot when it rains in the area.

A sample half day on a bike
One way to use the hours between the gates.
Morning
Pay the park fees online in advance, arrive soon after the gates open at 6 a.m. and hire your bike. Cooler hours and quieter roads make the first ride easier.
Midday
Ride to the gorge area, stop at the viewpoint and eat. Check what is open in the gorge before you head in, and leave if rain starts.
Gorge โAfternoon
Ride back, return the bike and leave the park well before 6 p.m. Some visitors add the geothermal spa or the rock towers near the gate.
Bring water, sun protection and a hat, and carry your rubbish out. Choose the Buffalo Circuit instead if you want a longer loop. For the whole trip from the capital, see tours.
Hell's Gate cycling: frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to cycle in Hell's Gate?

Can I bring my own bike?
Yes, but the bicycle fee still applies. Your own bike is not exempt.

About 7 to 8 km one way. The Buffalo Circuit is about 14 km.
Is it safe to cycle among animals?
Wildlife lives in the park and can be near the road. Keep at least 20 m away, never feed animals and stop if one is on the road. Riding is not risk-free, so ride sensibly and early in the day.
Do I need a guide to cycle?
Check at the gate whether a guide is advised for your route. The gorge is a separate question with its own rules, see the gorge page.
