Nairobi to Hell's Gate by road
Hell's Gate National Park is about 90 km from Nairobi, as a general figure for the park. From Nairobi you take the A104 Uplands Road towards Naivasha and then the Moi South Lake Road. Elsa Gate lies 25 km from the junction with Moi South Lake Road, so the distance to the gate depends on where you start.
As a planning figure, allow a little more than 2 hours from Nairobi. Traffic and rain add time. Many visitors choose a Hell's Gate day tour from Nairobi, which covers the transfer in one trip, instead of driving themselves.

Elsa Gate and the park gates
Where you enter and what the gate costs.
Elsa Gate
Elsa Gate is the road access to Hell's Gate. Olkaria Gate is a second access, so check which one suits your plan. The entry fee page lists the rates.
Gate hours
The gates are open from 06:00 to 18:00. Overnight guests are an exception, as the camping guide explains.
Vehicle fees per day
A vehicle with fewer than 6 seats pays KES 600. A vehicle with 6 to 12 seats pays KES 1,500. A parking fee of KES 1,000 for East African citizens and $30 for non-residents also exists, but it does not apply to visitors with paid park tickets.
Payment
Park entry is paid in advance through eCitizen (KWSPay), and the gate does not take cash.
Driving inside
Stay on existing roads and tracks and drive no faster than 40 km/h. Keep 20 m from animals.
The Olkaria Geothermal Spa approach
The Olkaria Geothermal Spa lies inside the park and has its own approach. About 35 km from Naivasha along the Moi South Lake Road, you reach the spa entrance. Coming from Nairobi, the turnoff is about 2 km before Naivasha. This route leads to the spa, not automatically to Elsa Gate. The spa guide has the details.
Naivasha town lies on the way. For the town and the lake, see getting to Lake Naivasha. If you combine both in a day, a tour that covers the park and a boat ride on the lake is also possible.

Entry rules for Kenya in 2026
Most visitors need an eTA before they travel. Apply at least 2 weeks ahead, as processing usually takes about 3 working days. An approved eTA does not guarantee entry. Check the exemptions for your nationality and residence status.
Since October 2026, Kenyan travel health insurance has been required in connection with the eTA, even if your eTA was already valid. Arrange it separately. Proof of yellow fever vaccination is needed if you arrive from a yellow fever area, not for every park visitor. For the first days in the capital, see getting around Nairobi.

Tips for your day
Small habits that save time at the gate.
Start early
The gates open at 06:00, and a bike ride or a walk fits best in the cooler morning hours. Add time for traffic on the A104.
Prepare the payment
Pay for park entry in advance on eCitizen, so you are not stuck at a gate that takes no cash.
Check the weather
Rain slows the drive and affects the tracks and the gorge. See the weather guide before you set out.
