Ol Njorowa Gorge in brief
The Ol Njorowa Gorge, also spelled Ol Jorowa, is the cut through the rock that Hell's Gate is named after. Its walls are layered volcanic rock, and the lower gorge narrows to a slot between smooth, pale walls. Visitors come to see it on foot, often after a bike ride across the plain from Elsa Gate.
Park entry does not mean the narrow gorge is open. Access to the lower gorge changes, and it depends on the day, the weather and the rangers. Ask at Elsa Gate before you pay for a guide, and follow every closure and local instruction.

Our picks: tours with a gorge walk
All three list a gorge walk in the programme, but none can promise access, so ask the provider about the current situation before you book. The longer bike-and-hike day is the most complete, and the group day is the cheaper way to get a guided walk.
Hand-picked tours, booked through GetYourGuide. Prices are indicative starting prices in US dollars (as of October 2026). Tap a tour for live availability and the current price in your currency.

Hells Gate gorge: what you can see and do
Three levels of access.
The main valley and the cliffs
You can see the cliffs, the gorge walls and the plains from the roads. This is part of a normal park visit, and it is where cyclists spend most of their time.
Cycling โThe viewpoint
An upper viewpoint looks down into the green gorge. It is a short stop, and it needs no climbing.
The narrow lower gorge
The walk can include a guided route with hot springs and a spot known as the Devil's Bedroom, but the narrow section has been closed to visitors at times. Do not plan a day around it until the rangers confirm it is open.

Guides and ranger escorts
Two different services.
Community guides
Local guides lead gorge walks where they are allowed. No fixed price applies across the park, so agree the price, the route and the length before you start. Do not treat a guide fee as an official gorge fee.
KWS ranger escort
A KWS ranger escort costs KES 2,000 for up to 4 hours and KES 4,000 for longer, with a minimum of 2 rangers. It is a separate service and is not the same as a community guide.
All fees โSwimming and hot water
Do not assume you may bathe in hot springs, hot outflows or the gorge itself. The Olkaria spa is the place for a hot soak.
Spa โFlash floods and closures
The risk is rain that falls somewhere else.
A flash flood in the gorge on 22 April 2012 killed seven people. Another on 1 September 2019 killed seven people and was followed by a closure of the gorge. Water can reach the gorge from rain that falls outside the park, so a dry sky at the entrance does not mean the gorge is safe.
Know the rainy months
The long rains run from March to May, and a second rainy season runs from October to December. Sudden floods are possible in heavy rain.
Weather โTurn back early
If rain starts anywhere in the area, leave the gorge and move to high ground. Do not wait to see what the water does.
Follow rangers and closures
If rangers close the gorge, it is closed. No fixed rain threshold is set, so the call is theirs on the day.
How to prepare for the gorge
Practical points for a day that includes it.
Before you go
Ask at Elsa Gate what is open on the day and what the guide fee is. Check the weather for the whole Naivasha area, not only the park.
What to carry
Bring water, sun protection and shoes with a good grip, since rock and wet ground can be slippery. Leave valuables in the vehicle or at the hire shop.
What to avoid
Do not enter narrow sections alone, do not climb the walls and do not stay in the gorge once water starts to rise or the sky turns dark upstream.
If the gorge is closed, you can still ride to the viewpoint, see Fischer's Tower and visit the geothermal spa. A closed gorge does not make the trip pointless.
Ol Njorowa Gorge: frequently asked questions
Can I walk through the Ol Njorowa Gorge?
It depends on the day. The park can be open while the narrow lower gorge is closed. Ask at Elsa Gate what is open, and walk the gorge only where rangers allow it.
Do I need a guide?
Where gorge walks are open, a guide is advised and may be required. Check at the gate on the day. The ranger escort and a community guide are different services.
How long does the gorge walk take?
That depends on the route you are allowed to take and on your pace, so ask the guide before you start. Plan a half day for the ride and the walk together.
Is the gorge dangerous?
It can be, because of flash floods. Rain outside the park can send water through quickly. Avoid the gorge when it rains in the area and follow all closures.
Can I swim in the hot springs?
Do not assume so. Treat hot springs and hot outflows as not for bathing. The geothermal spa is a separate visit with its own ticket.
