How a Hell's Gate tour works
Most Hell's Gate National Park tours are day trips. The park is a little over 2 hours by road from Nairobi, so a typical day has a morning drive, several hours of cycling or walking, and the drive back before dark. A half day is enough for a bike ride. A full day leaves room for more activities, such as the geothermal spa.
Offers differ in what they include. Some cover only the transfer, others add park entry, a bike or a guide. Always check the list of inclusions, and do not assume the gorge walk is part of the day. Prices on this page are for 2026 and they change.

Our picks: day trips from Nairobi
These are the day trips with pickup in Nairobi that actually go into Hell's Gate, some with a stop at Lake Naivasha. Fees differ a lot between them, so look at what each card says is extra. The two-day trip suits you if you do not want to rush the park.

What a day trip price is made of
The parts that can sit inside a tour price or on top of it.
| Part of the trip | Who charges | Amount in 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer from Nairobi | Tour operator | Depends on the offer |
| Park entry, adult non-resident | KWS | $50 (child $25) |
| Vehicle fee, 6 to 12 seats | KWS | KES 1,500 per day |
| Bicycle activity fee | KWS | $10 (non-resident) |
| Bike hire | Hire shop near Elsa Gate | KES 800 to 1,200 per day |
| Ranger escort | KWS | KES 2,000 up to 4 hours |
| Geothermal spa | KenGen | Own ticket, see spa page |
| Lake Naivasha boat ride | Boat operator | Own price, if the day includes it |
For most visitors without a car, a guided day trip from Nairobi that lists park entry and the bike as included is the simplest plan. If you have a car and your own time, you can drive up, hire a bike at the gate and pay the park fees online. See entry fee and cycling for the details.
Hell's Gate day trip: ways to organize it
Three common shapes of a day.
Cycling day
Hire bikes near Elsa Gate and ride to the gorge area and back. This suits most visitors, with a picnic and a stop below the cliffs. Allow half a day.
Cycling guide โWalking and the gorge
A guided walk depends on what is open on the day. Ask before you book anything that promises a gorge walk.
Gorge guide โPark plus Lake Naivasha
Some operators combine Hell's Gate with a boat ride on Lake Naivasha on the same day, also from Nairobi. It makes a long day. Boat rides, hippos and Crescent Island belong to the lake: see boat rides on Lake Naivasha.
What to check before you book
The wording differs more than the prices do.
What is included
Look for park entry, vehicle fee, bike and bicycle fee, guide and meals. If one is missing, add it to the price yourself.
Meeting point and time
Check where the pickup is, when it leaves and when you get back. The gates close at 6 p.m.
Rain plans
Ask what the operator does in heavy rain, and whether the day can change if the gorge is closed. A booked date does not make the gorge safe.
Weather โYour entry to Kenya
Many travelers need an eTA, and from October 2026 Kenyan travel health insurance applies as well. Check this before you book a day trip at all.

Hell's Gate National Park tour or self-drive?
Two ways to get to the park.
Guided tour from Nairobi
The operator handles the drive and the schedule. This suits visitors without a car or without time for the road, which runs on the A104 and the Moi South Lake Road.
The road โSelf-drive or transfer
You set your own pace and pay the fees yourself. Elsa Gate is 25 km from the Moi South Lake Road turn-off. Public transport is possible but has no fixed timetable to rely on.
Either way, the park fees and the bicycle fee are set by KWS and stay the same. The difference is who pays them and when, so ask for a clear list.
Hell's Gate tours: frequently asked questions
Can I visit Hell's Gate as a day trip from Nairobi?
Yes. The park is a little over 2 hours by road from Nairobi. A day trip leaves room for cycling or a walk, and a full day leaves room for extras.
Is park entry included in the tour price?
It depends on the offer. Some include it and some do not. Check the list of inclusions, and remember that the KWS entry is $50 for a non-resident adult.
Can I combine Hell's Gate with Lake Naivasha?
Yes, some operators offer both on one day, including from Nairobi. Expect a long day, and confirm what the boat ride adds to the price.
Does the day trip include the gorge walk?
Do not assume it. Gorge access depends on the day, the rangers and the weather. Ask the operator what happens if it is closed.
Is this site a tour operator?
No. This site is a guide, not a tour operator. It is not run by the Kenya Wildlife Service, KenGen or any tour company, and the tours shown come from booking partners.
