Rock climbing at Hell's Gate
Rock climbing is one of the activities in Hell's Gate National Park, next to cycling and walking. Fischer's Tower is a climbing site, and the park's management plan also mentions the cliffs beside it. The rock is volcanic, with tall walls and columns above open grassland.
Confirm route names, grades and the condition of any bolts on site with a guide. If you only want to see the rocks, the page on Fischer's Tower and Central Tower is enough. If you prefer a day trip, look at the Hell's Gate day trips from Nairobi.

Crags and what is known about them
The places named for climbing.
| Place | Notes |
|---|---|
| Fischer's Tower | Rock climbing site; a column about 25 m tall near the main gate |
| Cliffs beside the tower | Named in the park's management plan; ask which parts are used |
| Central Tower | A separate formation; ask before you plan anything |
For most visitors with climbing gear, start at Fischer's Tower and ask the rangers at the gate which areas are open on your day.

Fees, guides and gear
What to budget and what to arrange in advance.
Park entry
The rate for non-resident adults is $50 and for children $25 in 2026, valid for one entry within 24 hours. East African citizens pay KES 500 and KES 250, and Kenya residents KES 675 and KES 350. Pay in advance through KWSPay or eCitizen, as cash is not taken at the gate. See the entry fee guide.
Climbing charge
The climbing charge is about KES 500 per climber on top of entry in 2026. Confirm the amount at the gate, as it may differ. You may also pay for gear and a guide.
Guides and gear
Ask for the guide fee before you book. Arrange a qualified guide and your gear before you arrive. Do not count on hiring a harness, rope or helmet at the gate.
Ranger escort
A Kenya Wildlife Service ranger escort is a separate service: KES 2,000 per ranger for up to 4 hours and KES 4,000 for longer, with at least 2 rangers. It is not a climbing instructor.
Vultures, wildlife and rules on the cliffs
The park's cliffs are nesting sites for Rüppell's vultures. Ask the rangers whether any section is avoided because of nests. There is no fixed closing calendar, so check each time. Keep at least 20 m from wildlife, do not feed animals and do not drive off the tracks.
You will share the foot of the cliffs with grazing animals. Animals can graze near the rock walls. Give them space, and read the guide to animals in Hell's Gate before you walk to the base of a crag.

Safety: weather, rock and gorges
Simple points that matter more than grades.
Rain and rock
Wet rock is slippery and rain can change a day quickly. Rain outside the park can also send water through the gorge, so do not enter the gorge after heavy rain. See the gorge guide for access and flood safety.
Tell someone your plan
Tell the rangers or your guide which crag you intend to climb and when you will be back. Carry water and sun protection. The gates are open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Mount Kenya instead
For alpine routes you need a different place. Climbing on the high peaks of Kenya has its own guide at Mount Kenya.
A climbing day, step by step
The order that avoids surprises at the gate.
Before you travel
Arrange a qualified guide and gear. Pay park entry in advance through KWSPay or eCitizen. Plan for a little over 2 hours by road from Nairobi, and read the getting there guide.
At the gate
The gates open at 6 a.m. Ask which cliffs are open, whether any section is avoided for nesting vultures and how the weather looks. Confirm the climbing charge if one applies.
At the rock
Start at Fischer's Tower. Keep 20 m from wildlife, stay on the tracks and keep your group together. Do not leave rope, tape or waste behind.
Afterwards
Tell the rangers when you leave. If you have energy left, a ride (see the cycling guide) or a soak at the Olkaria Geothermal Spa are the usual ways to end the day.
