Fischer's Tower at a glance
Fischer's Tower is a free-standing column of volcanic rock close to the main gate of Hell's Gate National Park. It stands about 25 m tall. The rock formed when molten material rose into a crack in the ground and set there. The softer rock around it has worn away over time, so the column now stands on its own above the bush. It is named after Gustav Fischer.
It is a well-known landmark of the park and easy to find, because it stands near the main gate. If you want to build the tower into a full day, look at the Hell's Gate day trips from Nairobi.

Central Tower and the obsidian caves
Central Tower is a second rock formation in the park, separate from Fischer's Tower. The obsidian caves are among the park's geological features as well. Obsidian is volcanic glass, a reminder that Hell's Gate sits in an area shaped by eruptions.
Treat the caves as something to ask about, not to plan around. Access depends on current conditions, and you should not enter any area that is closed or marked off. Rangers at the gate can tell you what is open on your day. Central Tower has its own height, so do not compare it with Fischer's Tower by eye.

How to visit Fischer's Tower
Practical points for a stop at the tower.
Getting there
The tower lies near the main gate, so you do not need to cycle far to reach it. Road access runs through the Elsa Gate. The route from Nairobi takes a little over 2 hours by road.
Paying the entry
The rate for non-resident adults is $50 and for children $25 in 2026, valid for one entry within 24 hours. East African citizens pay KES 500 and KES 250. Pay in advance through KWSPay or eCitizen, as cash is not accepted at the gate.
By bike or by car
Cycling and walking are allowed on the park's tracks. Cycling is charged as an activity on top of the entry: KES 300 for East Africans and residents and $10 for other visitors. A vehicle needs a separate daily fee, from KES 600 for cars with fewer than 6 seats. Read the cycling guide before you rent a bike.
Park rules at the tower
Stay on roads and paths. Off-road driving is banned and the speed limit is 40 km/h. Keep at least 20 m from wildlife, do not feed animals and take your plastic and waste with you.
Climbing and rock
The tower is also a climbing site.

For most visitors, the tower is a place to look at, photograph and walk around. If you want to climb, read the page on rock climbing at Hell's Gate first.
The setting around the tower
Hell's Gate was the outlet of a prehistoric freshwater lake. That is why the park has cliffs, a gorge and open plains in a small area. From the tower you see the cliffs on the far side of the plain and zebras may be grazing on the plain.
Names are easy to mix up. In the park the landmarks are written Fischer's Tower and Central Tower. A well-known story links the park to The Lion King, but no rock here is the film's Pride Rock. The page on Hell's Gate and The Lion King explains the story behind the link.

The park around the tower
A few facts that help you place the rock.
Where it is
Hell's Gate National Park lies in Nakuru County in the Rift Valley, south of Lake Naivasha, between the lake and the volcanoes Longonot and Suswa. It is the Hell's Gate in Kenya, not the places of the same name in New Zealand, Canada or the United States.
Size and age
The park was gazetted on 2 February 1984 under Legal Notice 13 and covers 68.25 km². That makes it a compact park, which is why a bike or a short walk covers a lot of ground.
Altitude
The park lies at roughly 1,500 to 2,200 m above sea level. The air is thinner than at the coast, so bring water and sun protection even on a short walk to the tower.
Next to the gorge
The tower is only one part of the scenery. The gorge has its own rules and flood risk, so read the gorge guide before you plan a walk beyond the tower.
